Caved

Demane & Demazana

This game is based on the South-African fairy tale 'Demane & Demazana'. In this tale, two orphans run away from their home to live in the wilderness. Unfortunately, they are not safe. A cannibal named 'Zim' finds them and tricks Demazana into letting him in when she's alone by pretending he is her brother. Luckily, she has her big brother who will do everything to save her!

The Adaptation

This game takes place after the fairy tale. Demazana wakes up in a strange cave, has no recollection of what has happened, and can't find her brother. While moving through this strange environment, she finds cave paintings showing her different memories. 

All the memories are true events and it's up to the player to decide what she remembers. 

Purpose

The purpose of ‘Caved’ is to show its player the tragedy hidden in fairy tales. By confronting them with a setting where they have to choose what a child does and does not remember from a traumatic event, we hope to open the discussion about two coping mechanisms of childhood trauma: forgetting or reliving?
